Life Sciences 7: Syllabus

What do we learn in Life Science? Grading Procedures for Life Science.
Welcome to Life Science

This letter is to let parents and students know about some policies and procedures in science class this year. It will also give a brief overview of the curriculum and grading standards for the class.

Expectations-

The students are expected to be on time and prepared for class. This means that the must have with them a notebook, a folder (exclusively for science class), a pen, and a pencil. Students will receive a textbook, and they will be asked to bring it to class periodically.
Students will be expected to sign a lab safety contract that informs them of the rules and expectations in the lab and classroom. They are also expected to behave with courtesy and respect toward all the people and property in the classroom.

Assignments-

Assignments will be displayed in the classroom and given periodically. Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the assigned dates. Students who are absent on the day an assignment is given will be allowed an extra day to complete the work. If the student misses a test, quiz, or lab activity, they will be allowed a week to make up the work. The student must arrange a time with me to make up work. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange to make up assignments they missed. I’m available before school at 7:30 as well as by appointment at other times. No late work is accepted.
Projects
Habitat Observation Project- Due late November
Pedigree Project- Due early spring

The Curriculum-

Life Science is the branch of science that studies living things and their environments. The classes will be divided into separate units of study with biology being a more advanced class. The units of study; 1. What is Life?/Chemistry of Life 2. Ecology 3. Cells 4. Genetics 5. Population Change 6. Plants 7. Lower Life Forms 8. Vertebrate Animals

Grades-

Grades are determined by a percentage of points earned on assignments, tests, quizzes, lab work, and projects.
90-100% =A 80-89% =B 70-79% =C 60-69% =D Below 60% =NC
Grades are posted in class every two weeks. They are also available on the internet.

Blended Learning Days -
To help with unpredictable weather, R-P Schools is continuing with its Blended Learning school days. Blended Learning Days will go into effect for all school closings due to inclement weather (not including delayed openings). Here are the general guidelines for Blended Learning Days in my classroom:

A. Students will need to check my Google Classroom page to find their Blended Learning Day assignment.  Assignments will be posted no later than 9:00 AM.

B. I will be available to answer questions, via email or phone, until 3:30 PM.

C. Students without internet access will be given materials to take home prior to a Blended Learning Day.  Using these materials, they will be given instructions on how to complete their Blended Learning Day assignment.
