Mr. Mlsna
Fall Semester 2007

Course Description: Welcome to Social Studies12!!! This course uses local, national, and international current events to make connections with governmental functions. World and societal problems are viewed and solutions are proposed and debated. This course also spends some time examining the civil liberties that all Americans have today. The establishment of those civil liberties, through court cases, and modern day threats to those freedoms are also viewed. U.S. foreign policy and its impact on American society will also be covered.

Materials needed: Students will need to bring their textbook (¡§American Government by William A McClenaghan¡¨) a notebook, folder, pen and pencil to class daily. Textbooks will need to be covered!!

Classroom Rules: There are three very basic rules that govern this classroom:

„Ï BE RESPECTFULL TO YOURSELF AND EVERYONE ELSE IN THE ROOM.

„Ï COME PREPARED TO CLASS EVERY DAY!!

„Ï BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS OR LACK THEREOF.

If a student fails to comply with any of these three rules there will be swift and definite results. Results will range from added assignments to removal from class and detention. I expect very few problems from this class since you are all seniors!!!

Expectations: Students are expected to come to every class prepared, and ready to participate in classroom activities. If a student does not come prepared, or is unwilling to participate it will have a negative impact on his/her academic standing. Consequently, the more a student participates the better their academic standing will be.

Grading Scale: The grading scale is based on the total points available over the course of the semester. My grading scale is set up this way so that even if a student struggles on some assignments they can still make it up by the end of the term.

Extra Credit: A student must give a brief presentation at the end of the week to explain 5 things going on in the news and why they are important. Students may earn up to 10 points per week for each board.

Late Assignments: No late assignments will be accepted.

Attendance: A) If you are not in the room when the bell rings you will be marked tardy, unless you have a pass from another teacher. B) For every 3 unexcused tardies you receive, you will get one noon detention.

Absence: Students will have one day after they return to finish any assignments necessary. Example: If a student is gone and misses an assignment on Tuesday and they return on Wednesday then the assignment given will be due on Thursday. If you know that you are going to be gone then you will not get any extra days. It is your responsibility to come in and get the assignment before your absence.

Cell Phones: If I even see a cell phone during class time you will have your phone taken away for the remainder of the day and receive a noon detention. No exceptions what so ever.
